Caring for Your Lawn This Winter
Three simple things that make a big difference over the cooler months
Why winter care matters
Three things to do right now
During winter your lawn gets less sunlight each day. Longer grass blades capture more of that limited light and send more energy down to the roots. Raise your mower a notch or two higher than your summer setting and keep it there for every mow through winter. Never take off more than a third of the blade in a single mow.
Winter rainfall in Perth is usually enough to keep your lawn hydrated. Running your reticulation on top of natural rainfall leads to overwatering, which causes waterlogging, fungal disease and shallow root growth. Turn your system off and let the rain do the work. If there is a dry spell, water manually in the morning rather than setting the system back on a timer.
This is the big one. During winter your lawn enters a semi-dormant state and the soil becomes less active. Granular fertilisers rely on the soil to break down and deliver nutrients to the roots, and in cold, slow conditions a lot of that product simply sits there and goes to waste. Liquid fertilisers bypass the soil entirely. They are applied directly to the leaf and absorbed almost immediately, getting nutrients into the plant when it needs them most.
