What is a pre-emergent?

Think of it as a shield for your lawn. Most weed killers work after weeds have already appeared. A pre-emergent works differently. It sits in the soil and stops weed seeds from germinating in the first place. No germination means no weeds. Spartan gives you up to 6 months of protection from a single application.

Spartan creates a barrier in the soil. Weed seeds absorb it as they try to germinate and die before they ever break through the surface.

When to apply

Before summer

Apply in early spring to stop summer weeds like summer grass and crab grass from taking hold.

Before winter

Apply in late summer or early autumn to stop winter grass and other cool-season weeds from germinating.

      Timing is everything. Spartan must be applied before weeds germinate. Once you can see weeds, it is too late and you will need a post-emergent herbicide instead.
    

How to apply it

Mix it up

Add Spartan to water in a pressure sprayer. Follow the recommended rate on the label for your lawn size.

Spray evenly

Cover the entire lawn surface. Good even coverage is important so there are no gaps where weeds can sneak through.

Water it in

Apply at least 6mm of water within a few days, either from irrigation or rain. This activates the product and moves it into the soil where it works.

Leave the soil alone

Do not aerate or disturb the soil after applying. Doing so breaks the barrier and lets weeds through.
